Just behind Russia and Canada, the United States is the third largest country in the world in terms of land mass. So it makes sense that some of the biggest homes in the world reside in America. But it’s not just the sheer size that makes these massive homes so majestic. It’s the exterior design, breathtaking scenery, and beautifully styled interiors that turn these mansions into something truly remarkable. From a $250 million, 38,000-square-foot home in Los Angeles to a Georgian Colonial Manor in New Jersey that’s surrounded by acres of trees, AD rounds up 20 of the largest homes in America for sale right now. 28 of the Most Expensive Homes for Sale in America

TEXT BY

From coast to coast, America is filled with beautiful homes. Much of what makes the structures—such as private oceanfront properties or 57,000-square-foot chateau-styled mansions—so stunning comes with a steep price tag. And quite frankly, the math is simple: The better the location, the larger the home, and the more over-the-top amenities equal sky-high listings. From the most expensive home in America (which includes a James Bond–themed home theater and a four-lane bowling alley) to homes situated roughly 1,400 feet in the sky, AD rounds up the 28 most expensive homes in America for sale.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi List Montecito Villa for $45 million

From The Hollywood Reporter:

3:40 PM PDT 3/20/2017 by Peter Kiefer

Since purchasing the home in 2013 for $26.5 million, the couple has acquired two adjacent properties that pushed the size of the current estate to 16.88 acres.

In her continued (unofficial) pursuit to become one of Hollywood’s most prolific and successful house flippers, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, the actress Portia de Rossi, have listed their Montecito villa for $45 million.

Since purchasing the home in 2013 for $26.5 million, the couple has acquired two adjacent properties that pushed the size of the current estate to 16.88 acres. The stonework, landscaping with olive and eucalyptus trees and the rustic-chic interior are clear evocations of a home that could have existed on the Appian Way centuries ago that was owned by a Roman senator.

The 10,500-square-foot home sits atop a winding, secluded street with ocean views on one side and mountain views on the other. Designed and built in the 1930s by architect Wallace Frost, the home has six bedrooms, six baths, nine fireplaces, a media room, multiple libraries, a living room, a formal dining room, and a modern kitchen with marble-wrapped surfaces. In the photos below, note the walls of locally quarried stone, the barrel-tiled roof, terra-cotta surfaces, and exposed ceiling beams, all complemented by 18th century Italian tiles.

The grounds feature several fountains, statues and gardens, along with an outdoor dining area. The most modern addition is an indoor-outdoor entertaining area with an infinity pool, a tennis court and a Japanese soaking tub.

The listing agent on the home is Sotheby’s Suzanne Perkins. To visit Suzanne’s website click here

Lincoln Park Mansion Hits the Market for $50M, a Price Record for Chicago

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON DECEMBER 08, 2016 MANSION GLOBAL

chicago

A French-style mansion boasting an ornate stone façade in Chicago’s upscale Lincoln Park neighborhood hit the market Thursday with an asking price of $50 million, looking to set a record for the city.

The mansion was built in 2008 by its current owners, Richard Parrillo, chairman and CEO of Florida-based United Automobile Insurance, and his wife, Michaela, according to Matt Leutheuser from Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty, who is co-listing the property with Tim Salm from the same brokerage.

Situated on seven city lots (about 0.6 acres) and a few blocks away from Lake Michigan, the 25,000-square-foot mansion has six bedrooms, seven full and four half-bathrooms, as well as an indoor grilling room, multiple kitchens, and dining and living areas, according to the listing.

Wrapping around a curving staircase with an ornate black and gold-wrought iron balustrade are galleries showcasing the Parrillos’ art collection. In the basement, there is a wine cellar and a wine tasting room equipped with a Louis XIII fireplace.

Outside, there is a garden with a reflecting pool, a large terrace with outdoor fireplace and a kitchen overlooking the yards, lots of fountains and parking spaces in the front of the property.

“The overall thought and imported materials put into this mansion are impressive, and the amount of space in this great location is irreplicable,” said Mr. Leutheuser.

The Parrillos, who were not immediately available for comment, spent more than five years to build the mansion, according to Mr. Leutheuser. “It is really a labor of love,” he said, “but they’ve decided to sell because they are spending more time in Florida.”

The most expensive listing to ever hit the market in Chicago was a top-floor unit at the Trump International Hotel & Tower in 2012. The asking price was $32 million and it sold for $17 million in 2014 , according to Realtor.com.
