J. Crew Men’s Designer Heads West This Summer With A Trip To Dunton Hot Springs

From J.Crew Blog:

J. Crew’s Dutch-born men’s designer, Frank, has always gotten ideas for their traditional American gear from the landscapes of the West. This summer, he headed to Colorado’s, Utah’s and Wyoming’s national parks to soak up (and share) some scenery. Here’s a sample of what he saw…and packed.

Arches National Park.
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park.
Frank at Taggart Lake in Grand Teton National Park.
Mesa Arch at Canyonlands National Park.

WHY DID YOU PICK THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY?

I’ve had pictures of Dunton Hot Springs [a rustic retreat located in a former ghost town in southwest Colorado] on my inspiration boards for years, so it was just a natural decision to finally go see it in person. Its rough-hewn look and location have always appealed to me. There’s something incredibly romantic about that part of the country.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE TRIP?

Arches and Canyonlands [national parks in Utah] never fail to impress, but my favorite part was watching a herd of bison in Yellowstone… It made me feel at one with nature but also reminded me that this part of the country belongs to the wildlife. Spotting some grizzlies was pretty cool as well!

WHAT DID YOU PACK?

I almost always pack the same things: a lightweight windbreaker to keep dry, a fleece top to keep warm and some versatile shorts. Sturdy hiking boots are also a must. I wore mine on the plane to save space in my luggage.

ANY ADVICE FOR YOUR FELLOW TRAVELERS CONSIDERING A TRIP OUT WEST?

Go at the end of May, beginning of June, to avoid the crowds at Yellowstone. The wildflowers will be in bloom and a lot of newborn animals will be out for the first time. We saw bison and moose calves and grizzly cubs.
